Research Facility Security: Define Every Boundary
Research environments can bring offices, laboratories, specialist equipment rooms, meeting spaces, and restricted work areas together within one building. The challenge is to establish which people can enter which locations, while allowing normal research activity to continue.
West Coast Security & Patrol discusses physical security requirements for research facilities for properties in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties.
Access Map: Who Goes Where?

What the security instructions should clarify
Reception
Where visitors report and who receives them
Laboratory entrance
Which entry procedure has been approved by facility management
Equipment room
Which personnel have permission to enter
Research offices
Whether the area is staff-only or accepts scheduled visitors
Campus pathways
Which external routes and buildings fall within the assignment
The purpose of this map is not to establish research permissions independently. The facility’s authorized personnel must provide the rules; security staff should follow and communicate them.
Security Has a Defined Role
Security coverage for laboratories should focus on the physical-security tasks included in the assignment. Depending on the agreed scope, this may involve observing designated access points, following visitor procedures, or patrolling identified areas.
It does not automatically include research supervision, biosafety decisions, scientific equipment operation, cybersecurity, or management of confidential research records. Those responsibilities belong to the relevant technical and administrative teams.
For a university or multi-building research property, patrols across research campuses should specify the buildings, exterior areas, and routes covered. A single instruction sheet may not be sufficient if different departments have separate access procedures.
The Handover That Makes Instructions Work
- Before the first shift, a designated facility representative should provide current access instructions and identify the appropriate contact for questions. The security assignment should record the key boundaries and explain how unexpected access requests are handled.
- When hours change for a scheduled experiment, maintenance visit, or special event, the client should establish how revised instructions will be approved and communicated. Guards should not have to guess whether an unfamiliar visitor or requested access exception has been authorized.
- The reporting process also matters. The facility and security provider should agree on how concerns are communicated, who receives updates, and which matters need immediate escalation under the property's instructions.
A Note for Research Managers
A security provider cannot guarantee that sensitive research will never be exposed or that every unauthorized entry will be prevented. The aim is to establish defined physical-security responsibilities that complement the facility’s own procedures.

Questions
Still have any questions?
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
How much does physical security for a research facility cost?
The price depends on staffing, coverage hours, building layout, access requirements, and the physical areas included in the assignment. The requested duties should be clearly outlined before a quote is prepared.
Can guards follow our existing laboratory access procedures?
Security instructions can be based on procedures provided by authorized facility personnel. Management must establish access permissions and identify who can approve exceptions or resolve questions.
What should we check before signing a security contract?
Confirm the covered buildings and entrances, reporting arrangements, service hours, contract duration, and any minimum commitment. The agreement should also explain how changes to access requirements or coverage will be handled.
How quickly can research facility security be arranged?
The start date depends on availability and the time required to review the facility’s instructions, restricted areas, reporting process, and proposed scope of work.
